An Ode to Microspikes

Your hard spikes bite into hard ice.
One or two teeth grab.
That's all that's necessary.

Ice, snow, and rock you eat
like sausage, egg, and cheese burritos
from McDonald's.

Without you I would watch more TV in the winter.

Update of the Run Log

Week of February 5th to 11th, 2012: 2.25 Miles in one run, 100' of vert. total.

Week of February 12th to 18th, 2012: 11.2 miles in two runs; 7.2 mile long run, 36th out of 202 at Winter Wild Pat's Peak. 2,500' vert. total.

Week of February 19th to 25th, 2012: Sadly, no runs this week.

Week of February 26th to March 3rd, 2012: 6.25 in two runs; McCabe, and 37th out of 150 at Winter Wild Sunapee, 1,600' vert. total.

Technically, I have started training but my numbers don't show it yet. To be honest, I have needed some rest time lately because I started my laborious job (snowmaking) before I was completely recovered from the Bear. But as of the first week in March I am fairly well rested and ready to go!

Three Weeks of Run Log

Weekly Run Log Jan. 15-21, 2012

01/18/2012: Skatutakee by Harriskat Trail. Some snow finally. 0:26 to the summit. 0:47, 3.2 miles, 650' vert.

Weekly Summary: 3.2 miles, 650' vert.

Weekly Run Log Jan. 22-28, 2012

01/22/2012: Outer loop in McCabe. 20 degrees, sunny, several inches of powder on several crust. New Mountain Hardware Powerstretch Tights are warmer than my Salomon WS II Tights. ~0:35, 2.2 miles, 100' vert.
01/28/2012: Pumpelly to Cascade and then a little further. Ice from the freezing rain storm was falling all over the place. If it had been yesterday it would have been dangerous. 1:44, 7.2(+) miles. 1,100' vert.

Weekly Summary: 9.4 miles, 1,200' vert.

Weekly Run Log Jan.29-Feb. 04, 2012

01/30/2012: MCCabe inner loop. 0:18, 1.0(+) miles. 100' vert.
02/01/2012: White Dot to the summit of Monadnock. Been several years since I have been up this side. 1:15, 4.0 miles, 1700' vert.
02/04/2012: Winter Wild II at Ragged Mountain. Placed 23 out of 177 (including kids from local schools). I didn't care so much, this time, for going after it so I went out easy and kept myself from having a mild exercise-induced asthmatic attack. It was much more fun. Sounds like Pat's Peak will be two laps so I am excited for that to happen in two weeks. 0:24:37, 3.0 miles, 1000' vert.

Weekly Summary: 8.0 miles, 2,800' vert.

Weekly Run Log Jan. 08-14, 2012

I lost track of my runs for the week. When I tallied up my numbers I only had one run, thus making it easy to add. At least I got out.

01/14/2012: First Winter Wild race of the year at Whaleback ski area. A short race of 1.2 miles round trip coupled with 650' of climb led to a quick time. I placed 15th overall out of 128 who attended. This race was slightly strange because everyone was running it. They made a last minute decision to have the up track and down track on the same trail as opposed to the normal loop that they strive for. This was due to the mountain only having one trail open from top to bottom. Because of the two-way traffic they didn't want the skiers and runners mixing. It would have been too "dangerous." As always the race was fun but I ended up pushing it too hard and was coughing for about an hour afterward. I ended up limping my way in because of the cramp in my side. It was not a pretty race for me. For the next race I will try to keep my form better and go out a bit slower (I led the pack up the first steep). 14:33, 1.2 miles, 650' vert.

Weekly Run Log - January 01-07, 2012

01/01/2012: Smoked my best time for Dublin Trail up Monadnock because of a large amount of ice flowing down the trail. Put the Microspikes on and flew up the NEI 2- flow. 1:18, 4.6  miles, 1,700' vert.

01/07/2011: Craig Road to its jct with Reed Carr Road in my new Montrail Sabinos. Wondering if NH's frozen, uneven ground is adding stress to my still-weak ankles. Its like running on roughed up cement. Thinking it might be time to hit the dirt roads until the snow flies. 0:28, 3.2 miles, 100' vert.

Weekly Summary: 7.8 miles, 1,800' vert.

A Thought from the Trail...

... in the form of a haiku:

In goes food, water
Out comes solid, liquid, gas
My prism body
